Holiday Design Tip

Use holiday tableware for every meal in December. Don't have enough dishes? Discount stores often carry seconds of name brand china, as well as fun designs that are not so common. Even the grocery store has inexpensive holiday dishes. You can also select a holiday pattern that coordinates with your everyday dishes. Mix and match to create a full table setting.

Guests coming over?

The holidays are all about the treats. Even if you can't bake, slice up pre-made cookie dough and stick it in the oven. The smell of cookies baking is enough to put anyone in the holiday mood.

Easy Centerpiece Idea

A Christmas wreath laid in the center of the table is the beginning of the perfect centerpiece. If you use a live wreath, the fresh evergreen scent adds to the holiday spirit. Your wreath can be decorated with any objects you want to use as a theme. Add ribbons and bows. Inside the wreath place a large candle or several tapers.

Then add interesting gourds, Indian corn, beaded fruit and colorful mini-pumpkins and gourds. Finish off your display with brass, wood, or silver candle holders and candles in fall colors.

Design Basics

A reader writes that she is confused about warm and cool colors and why this is important in design. This is a fairly complex subject, because lighting, saturation, and hue can all make a color go cooler or warmer. Colors can also be either cool or warm (for example, green) depending upon the undertone. A quick overview of color theory:

WARM COLORS
Warm colors are yellow based. Warm colors are vivid in nature and tend to be associated with daylight or sunset. Warm colors are bold and energetic, vibrant and lively. Many warm colors are “earthy.” Examples of warm colors are
*brown *yellow *orange *yellowish green
*ecru *black *tan *gold
*beige *red *pink *off white
*terra cotta
Homeowners love warm colors. Most wood and stone colors are warm. Iron and leather are warm. Metals are polished, brushed, or antiqued and include gold, brass, bronze, and copper. If an element in your design needs to pop out, consider using warm colors to do that. Warm colors are great for social rooms such as your kitchen, dining room, and living room.

COOL COLORS
Cool colors are blue based. Cool colors are associated with a gray or overcast day. Cool colors give an impression of calm and rarely overpower the main content or message of a design. Cool colors are soothing and tend to recede. Examples of cool colors are
*white *ivory *silver *gray
*blue *bluish green *violet *purple
*aqua
Cool metals include aluminum, chrome, nickel, and silver. If some element of your design needs to be in the background, give it cool tones. Use cool colors in a bathroom or bedroom to evoke serenity and comfort.

As you decorate, first decide if you want the room to be warm or cool. The majority of color in the room should be either warm or cool. Can cool and warm home decorating colors be mixed? Yes, but sparingly. A good rule to follow is to pick one color from the other group and repeat the color at least twice and no more than three times.

Home Design Tips

Fall is in the air. We think we are all ready for autumn after this long hot summer. These are a few easy and inexpensive ideas to decorate your home for fall.
**Indian corn, pine cones and gourds can be festive decorations that fit well from the beginning of September until Thanksgiving. Pick some that are unique in shape and color and gather some in a basket to put on your floor in a corner or on your kitchen table. Tiny pumpkins and gourds can be tied with fall colored ribbons and scattered about the house.
**Put a festive fall table cloth on your table. Solid colors of crimson, burnt orange or yellow look fantastic when you put on a centerpiece of gourds, corn, colored leaves or flowers.
**Fill a basket with apples. Fresh picked from the North Georgia mountains, of course!
**For a simple and beautiful fall arrangement that will last throughout the season, place a perfect single pumpkin on a platter or wooden tray. Add branches of silk leaves, a few ears of dried corn, sprigs of wheat, and dried berries for the finishing touches.
**Be sure to spread some potpourri about the house. Pumpkin potpourri brings a wonderful fall scent into the home and its colors are perfect for your fall décor as well.
**Burn lots of candles. Candles bring a nice warmth to your house when the air starts to get chilly.
**Mums are the perfect fall foliage for your home. Mums are quite inexpensive and come in beautiful fall colors of yellow, crimson, mauve and purple. A huge pot on your fireplace hearth will create that fall feeling.

A great idea to update your home that will cost you less than a house payment

China and flatware traditionally goes on sale in September. An easy and inexpensive update for your kitchen and dining room is a new set of everyday dishes.

Home Design Trends

Updating your kitchen? A recent survey by the National Kitchen and Bath Association found that standard kitchen faucets are becoming less standard in favor of more convenient models. Pull-out faucets continue to increase their market dominance, while pot filler faucets are also becoming more prevalent. Kitchen faucets will most often be finished in brushed nickel, followed by stainless steel, satin nickel, and-surprisingly-polished chrome.

Did You Know

The design experts at Tuftex of California recognize the popularity of hard surface floors--hardwoods, tile and stone. Most residential interior designers start the flooring selection process with hard surface first. Then they look for carpet colors that work with and complement the wood, ceramic, and stone selections.

(Why? Because there are far more carpet color choices than wood and tile color options.) The Tuftex color palette has been selected with this in mind. You will find a broader array of mid- and dark-range neutrals, softer sages, and "tinted taupes." Accent colors include burnt sienna and teddy bear chocolate. The Tuftex color lines are broader, richer, and warmer than most collections currently available. These colors coordinate beautifully with stone, ceramic, and rich wood floors.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Stainless Steel Appliances

The grocery store is filled with products to use on your stainless steel appliances. Not to tout the virtues of specific products, but we can recommend the ScotchBrite Stainless Steel Surface Cleaning Kit. We find it to be easy to use, does the job well, and is very long lasting. It removes and resists fingerprints, cleans sticky spots easily, and the handle makes the product easy to use, even in awkward and hard-to-reach places. You do not have to buff off excess cleaner, as you sometimes have to with other products.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Granite Countertops

It is time to seal the granite. First clean your countertop thoroughly using a neutral cleaner. Never clean with any product containing acid, lemon, or bleach. Acids, even a light solution of vinegar and water, will eventually etch and damage natural stone. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface. Now apply the stone sealer. Stone sealers will need to be reapplied as soon as you notice water no longer stands (beads up) on the surface.

TIP: While dish soap will not hurt your granite, repeated and excessive use of soap will cause build-up and dull the shine. Also, don’t use bathroom, tub and tile, or window and mirror cleaners. The powders and even the “soft” creams contain abrasives that will scratch and dull surfaces. Use only cleaners made specifically for granite and stone.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Vinyl

Many people move their refrigerator to clean behind it as part of spring cleaning. If you are doing this, be sure your first lay down a sheet of plywood and roll the refrigerator onto the plywood. This keeps you from tearing or indenting the vinyl.

Now is a good time to vacuum and thoroughly clean the floors. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar. Be sure that the product you clean the floor with is the cleaner made by the manufacturer of the vinyl.

If the floor is showing wear, you can apply wax to bring back the shine. However, be sure you clean the floor thoroughly before waxing and be sure to use the wax made by the flooring manufacturer. Also, once you begin waxing a floor, remember that you will need to strip it before you wax it again.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Rugs

Have your area rugs professionally cleaned, either in your home or at the cleaner’s facility. If you are having your rugs cleaned at your home, be sure they are moved onto your driveway, garage, or deck for the cleaning so that the floor underneath is not damaged.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Carpet

Move your furniture so that you can vacuum under it. Wipe down your baseboards and crevice vacuum while the furniture is moved. Do not drag heavy furniture across the carpet; Berber carpet could snag and run; the heat and friction generated by the dragging of the heavy pieces can burnish the tips of the all carpet fibers, leaving a permanent mark.

The warranties on most carpets require the carpet to be professionally steam cleaned (hot water extraction) every 18 months. Many people do this in the spring to rid the home of all the winter grime that has been tracked in. Make sure you are choosing a reputable carpet cleaner and save the receipt. If you ever have to file a warranty claim, the manufacturer will require proof of regular professional cleanings.

TIP: When you need to spot clean your carpet, first call the manufacturer of your carpet or the Carpet and Rug Institute to find out the appropriate product to use.
Carpet and Rug Institute 706-278-3176
Shaw Industries 800-441-7429
Mohawk Industries 800-266-4295
Many cleaning products can set in the stain, or worse, damage the carpet. You will find that if you have a relatively new carpet most stains come up with just plain water. DO NOT go to the internet for spot cleaning advice. Please do NOT use things like bleach, shaving cream, Resolve, Simple Green, bathroom cleaners like scrubbing bubbles, peroxide, vinegar, ammonia, window cleaner, Vaseline, Spot Shot, shampoo, brake cleaner, or WD 40.

Check your exterior door mats and replace as needed.
Also check for any wrinkles, ripples, or buckles in your installed carpet. Call to have the carpet restretched as soon as you begin to notice any ripples.

TIP: Filtration soil is the dark or grayish lines on carpet along walls, stairways, or under doors. Changing the filters regularly on your HVAC system and using vacuums with good filtration systems can help prevent this problem.

Friday, April 2, 2010

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Exterior Doors

At least once a year, check your exterior doors for possible water penetration. Check the weather stripping for tears and deterioration. Check the sills and exterior thresholds for damage. Is caulking needed? Can you see daylight under the door? If you can see light under the door, water can also get through, especially with blowing rain. Sometimes this water gets under your floors without your noticing it until the damage is done. Thousands of dollars in damage can be caused by water penetration.

Monday, March 29, 2010

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Natural Stone Tile

Natural stone (travertine, marble, etc.) should be cleaned with neutral cleaners. Never clean with any product containing acid, lemon, or bleach. Acids, even a light solution of vinegar and water, will eventually etch and damage natural stone.

At least once a year you need to seal the tile and the grout. Some products are multi-purpose, meaning you can use the same product on the stone and the grout. Others are just for either the stone or the grout; be sure to read the instructions well to make sure you are using the proper product.

TIP: Don’t use generic cleaning products such as bleach, glass cleaner or degreasers. Don’t use vinegar, ammonia, lemon or orange as cleaners. These products that you buy at your local store contain acids, alkalis, and other chemicals that can etch marble and degrade the sealer, leaving the stone more vulnerable to staining. Trying to save money by using these over-the-counter products only ensures that you’ll spend a lot more time and money in the long run!

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Ceramic tile and porcelain are very easy to clean. Sweep or vacuum as needed and mop with a mild detergent (like Spic-N-Span or Mr. Clean) or ceramic tile cleaner. Don't use harsh abrasives.

Now it is time to seal your grout. Sealing your grout will make the grout less porous and more resistant to discoloration. Manufacturers recommend sealing your grout once a year to keep it looking its best. You can purchase grout sealer at Enhance Floors & More.

Also check any caulking. Caulking is used where the tile is exposed to water. Caulking prevents expensive subsurface damage. Recaulk wet areas as needed.

TIP: Don’t use bleach or ammonia based cleaners, as these products can discolor your grout.

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Laminate Floors

There is not much that you need to do to a laminate floor as part of your spring cleaning. Vacuum thoroughly and clean using the product made or recommended by the manufacturer of your floor. Check the felt tips on the legs of your furniture and replace as needed. If you are moving the refrigerator or other heavy pieces, do not drag or roll the items. This can damage a laminate floor. Replace your exterior door mats if needed, and just enjoy how easy it is to maintain your laminate floor!

It's Spring Cleaning Time ~ Hardwood Floors

First, check the legs of all furniture to see if the floor protectors need to be replaced. Replace as needed. It is now time for a thorough sweeping or vacuuming of your floors. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar or hard head on hardwood floors. The hard parts (plastic, metal) can scratch the floor. The vacuum head should be brush or felt; a wand attachment is preferable.

Be careful as you move furniture and appliances. Do not drag heavy pieces. You may need to use large pieces of cardboard or something similar to move the heavier items onto to protect the floors underneath. Many people move the refrigerator to clean behind and under it as part of their spring cleaning. Do not merely roll the refrigerator out. The weight of the refrigerator can easily indent the floor. You need to roll the refrigerator onto something so that you are not rolling it directly on the floor. Use a large piece of cardboard, a thin piece of plywood, or a piece of carpet with the fiber side down. We have seen more damage done to hardwood floors from moving a refrigerator than from any other cause.

Damp mop as needed using a hardwood floor mop and approved hardwood floor cleaner (do not use oil, wax, or ammonia based cleaners as they will dull the finish and performance of your floor. These products will also affect the ability to recoat your floor later.)

Since wood naturally expands when it is wet, never wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor. Large amounts of water can cause the wood to swell and may cause your floor to crack or splinter.

TIP: Just because something says it is for hardwood floors does not mean it should be used on the floor. Read the ingredients carefully. We are amazed by what various internet sources state to clean wood floors with. Do NOT use Orange Glo, Goof Off, steam mops, Windex, ammonia, dish soap, Pledge, vinegar, Pine Sol, Mr. Clean, Mop and Glo, bubble bath, Rejuvenate, tea, Simple Green, or similar products. Only use cleaners made by wood flooring manufacturers like Armstrong, Mohawk, or Bona.

Use good quality doormats at all of your exterior doors. Replace as needed.

Now is also a good time to look closely at your hardwood floors to determine if it is time for another coat of polyurethane. Start with the areas that get the most foot traffic. Are these areas duller than the wood in areas that do not get as much traffic? Do you see light scratches in the finish? If you can see superficial scratches and the traffic lanes are visible, it is time to recoat your wood floors. Most floors are in need of another coat of polyurethane every five years or so; although in some homes, another coat may be needed every 12—18 months. If you wait too long, a simple screen and coat will not be effective; the floors will need to be refinished.

TIP: Dust mop your wood floors frequently. Use a clean, dry, non-treated dust mop. Hardwood floors mops can be purchased at Enhance Floors & More if you do not have one. As we mentioned previously, be very careful if you choose to use a vacuum; worn parts or grit on the wheels will scratch the surface. Do not use a vacuum with a beater bar on the wood flooring.

It's Spring Cleaning Time

Spring is finally here, and for many of us, spring cleaning is on our “To Do” list. There is a lot of incorrect information about cleaning and maintaining your floor coverings, especially on the internet. If you are the one in charge of spring cleaning at your house, please take a few minutes to review what the major flooring manufacturers recommend.

Please be aware that most of the maintenance products and cleaners that you need to take care of your flooring investment are available at Enhance Floors & More.

A Great Idea To Update Your Home That Will Cost You Less Than A House Payment

A new backsplash for your kitchen in subway tiles. What is subway tile? Shiny white tiles that are 3” x 6”, usually installed in a brick pattern. This is a style that goes with everything and will NEVER go out of style.

Design Tip

A coming design trend is black and white kitchens. In the past few weeks, we have installed floor covering in several homes that were updating their kitchen using a black and white color theme. This is a dramatic color scheme that is contemporary as well as traditional, even retro. You can choose black or white cabinets, counter tops, appliances, light fixtures—the combinations are endless. Add a solid white back splash, maybe in a popular subway tile. Most flooring options feature a black and white pattern that ties it all together.

Mullican is also dedicated to forest management and supports the sustainable, renewable supply of raw materials to ensure that there will be plenty of forests available for future generations.

Most everyone agrees that wood floors add value to your home. Hardwood flooring is beautiful, practical, and an intelligent investment in your home!

Design Tip

Grey is the new neutral. Gray is calming and dramatic, less severe than black but more interesteing than white. Contemporary homes tend to look good with cooler blue-grays while more traditional settings call for warmer grays with brown or green undertones. Don't forget the Design Consultants at Enhance Floors & More can help you create the perfect new look for your home.

Buying A New Couch For The Family Room?

Be sure to consider the pros and cons of your fabric choices. Sofas for every day use need durable fabric. The experts at Good Housekeeping have tested a wide variety of fabrics and find that cotton and linen are winners for durability, but even when treated for stain resistance aren't as easy to clean. Synthetic microfiber can mimic most fabrics and is stain resistant and durable. Blends of natural and synthetic fiber tend to pill within a year. Wool and leather are handsome and strong but expensive. Silk is sleek but fragile. Fabrics with patterns woven in tend to wear better than those with printed patterns. Be careful with loose weaves-they can snag. Take the time to understand your choices so that you select the best product for your lifestyle and budget.

Design Tip Of The Month

What is a spa bathroom? A spa bathroom is a peaceful sanctuary where you can relax, rejuvenate, and revitalize your mind and body. Spa design usually takes a very minimalist approach, using only a few colors. The colors should be calm and neutral and reminiscent of natural elements, such a clouds, beaches, and river rocks. Typical materials used in a spa bath are tumbled stone, exotic woods, and glass mosaics. Other elements of spa baths include multi-jet showers, rain shower heads, steam showers, saunas, whirlpool tubs, heated floors and towel racks, and steam-free mirrors.

Not interested in major makeovers? Simple and inexpensive changes include the use of baskets, candles and soft rugs. Buy thick, plush towels and display them rolled. (These tips are from the most recent Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine. See January/February edition for the complete article.)
